Brother!
Where are you going?
Your mother did not sleep well!
Brother!
Come and see what you have done!
Brother!
Where are you going?
They said you went on a journey.
Brother!
Where are you going?
They said you went out.
My Brother!
This morning
You came home.
Who are you telling goodbye?
Brother.
Where are you going?
You say, God is calling you?
Exclamation!
What will I tell your mother?
What will I say?
Don't leave this house!
Don't you ever listen?
Brother!
What are you saying?
You are saying goodbye.
Good bye for what?
Brother!
My heart aches!
Sleep well!
For the morning will be good.
Brother !
Rise up!
For the morning has come with joy!
Brother!
What did you say?
You are going somewhere.
Where is this place?
You went out with the Master-Healer.
Brother!
My heart aches!
What will I say?
How will I tell your mother?
Brother!
Where are you going?
You went away with the Master-healer.
Brother.
Will you be at peace?
For the morning has come with joy o!
Where are you going?
You went away with the Master-Healer.
Brother.
What did you say?
You have gone to rest with God.
Brother!
Where are you going?
You have gone on a journey with the Master- Healer.
Brother!
Go with the King.
For the morning has come with joy!

LIVE

and this is I
blood, flesh and bone
standing tall
in all my pain
and this I
your blood and flesh
existing without you everyday
clinging still everyday
to memories
'fore they become a haze
and this is I
still in pain
unleashed only in the words I pen
who can forget
you came and saw
and now you exist
you are no more
and this is me
part of you
existing still
like you never were
and here I am
in all my pain
hold you still
in all my  thoughts
and yet ill write my heart out,
in all my pain
hoping that you'd come to life again
existing still with all my words.

in memory of Dan

OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND

Out of sight
Out of mind
Like a sewing needle in the forests eye
Out of sight
Out of touch
Like a gentle whisper in the middle of the night
Out of mind
Out of thought
Fading away like memories long before
And here we are
strangers two
Our bond fickle, too weak to hold
Out of sight
Out of mind
And all is lost with me and you.

REFLECTIONS - IKEJA ARMY CANTONMENT BOMB BLAST OF JANUARY 27TH, 2002.

Sunday, January 27th, 2002 is a day that I will not easily forget. It was the day when the armory of the Ikeja Army Cantonment exploded. Hundreds of people lost their lives that day not from the bomb explosion but because they panicked. It was reported in the news that period that many people fled into canals just because of assumptions of war that were not substantiated. May their souls rest in perfect peace, Amen.
We(my family) were at home that Sunday evening when we started hearing the explosions. We could even feel the impact of the bombs going off all the way in Ojodu Beger. We were still trying to figure out why the earth was vibrating and the sudden eerie change in the atmosphere when our neighbor, Mr. Umoh came home shouting 'there is war!'. He then proceeded to his flat to start packing his things. He said then that he was going to find his way back to Akwa-Ibom. My parents, siblings, neighbors and many other people had already started gathering outside their compounds trying to peep into the main road to check what the commotion was all about. My father was with his small box radio trying to tune into radio Nigeria to find out what the commotion was all about but when he couldn't get any clear information,he suggested that we go into the house.

Indoors, my father suggested that we pray. The prayer session was a bit confusing to me because he asked us to pray for Gods protection and forgiveness. I remember thinking to myself, protection from what and forgiveness for what? We already went to church that day and we had prayed there. Grudgingly I went down on my knees thinking again that by the time this long prayer session would be over, Channels Tv would have finished showing cartoons. Then it hit me! what if RAPTURE HAD TAKEN PLACE! Immediately, my attitude changed and I began to ask God to take me with him to heaven if he indeed had come. hahaha!

Later that evening on the seven o'clock news, the then Governor, Asiwaju Bola-Ahmed Tinubu, announced to Lagosians that  the explosions that we were hearing was as a result of an accidental detonation of a large stock of military explosives. This was after earlier announcements by the then police commissioner asking everybody to remain indoors and be calm while they investigate. It was a relief to hear that it was a bomb explosion in the Ikeja armory. Sequel to this announcement, general movement was restricted. I was at home for two weeks... maybe even more, because my secondary school was in the barracks.

The long break was highly welcomed by me. I didn't even want to go to school the next day because I was yet to finish my mathematics assignment. My maths teacher, Mrs Affia had promised me especially, six strokes of the cane if I failed to meet up. I can still remember her voice in my head,' Winnifred Ekwere! ( Ekwere pronounced as a- werre), I will ask Mad dog to flog you if I don't see your assignment by Monday!'. Mad dog was one of the soldiers at school. He was revered by all the students then for his flogging and punishment skills i.e he literally flogged liked a mad dog. In fact, he would flog shege out of you. So somehow the bomb explosion was in my favor because I knew that after the long break, Mrs Affia would have forgotten about the home work. Unfortunately, she didn't. She ended up becoming my lesson teacher in mornings before school resumed at 12pm. I never forgave my mother for that move because she knew how much I hated maths. Never the less, I still chop the home work cane!

I had attended Command day secondary school for two years and didn't even know that the armory was our next door neighbour. Years after the blast, my school's former site wasn't still safe because bomb capsules were still being detonated. Thankfully, I finished my Jss going to afternoon school, 12pm - 6pm. We had to share location with Command Children's School (they were the morning crew) because our site was destroyed by the blast. I remember then how we used to sit with our school bags still strapped to our backs just in case we needed to run. Imagine, bombs would be going off and with every explosion, everything from our desks to the building would rumble violently and we would be ready to take off. Sometimes, if you were standing, you had to hold on to something. Lol. What an experience!
It was fun attending afternoon school for me but my parents were always on edge because I came home from school at 10pm almost everyday! I remember the first time I came home late, they had already gone to Ojodu Police Station to report that their daughter was missing. Imagine the look on my father's Jerry Ekwere face when I got to the bustop of my house. Lol. I was waving my trekking partners goodbye (as it was the practice amongst us CDSS students then to trek in groups when we couldn't find public transport to go home. When it rained it was even worse! we would trek in the rain and in Lagos traffic just to get home). My dad hugged me like it was my birthday and my mother was almost in tears when I got home while my siblings were busy snoring away! I was brimming with excitement, eager to tell them about my adventures for that day but they were too shaken to even hear me out. Then, I wondered what their stress was sef. Afterall, I was home. So, as soon as my Junior Waec results were released, my mother bundled me off to Air Force Secondary School Ikeja to finish my secondary education there so that she could drink water, drop cup and sleep well! Lol. Ekwere Eno
As much as I'm grateful for the gift of life, I'm also grateful for all the adventures that were attached to going to afternoon school. Seeing them evacuate all those missiles and my morning expeditions inside the barracks with Chinyere n co will forever remain precious to me. Lol.

Thank you God for today. Imagine if January 27th, 2002 were a Monday, I wouldn't be here today to type this post. Thank you Bastos Temitayo Stephen for reminding us (ex CDSS students of Ikeja) to remain thankful for the gift of Life today.

Hope and Love are not yet lost - E.W

....'Mabel, I will always love you'. He'd said to her the night before in his text. She was sick and could barely move her legs when he arrived but with the little grace she had left she pulled herself up and headed towards his car . He neither supported her nor held her bags as she wearily opened the door to the passenger side of his SUV. He just watched her struggle through it all with unconcern written all over his face. And all the way to she hospital she wondered if he really loved her. His actions screamed the complete opposite of his declarations. Rubbing her massive belly she let out a loud sigh that only she knew the meaning to as she stared out the window.

...He'd texted 'hold on for me , I'll be there first thing in the morning'. It was 2 pm when he grudgingly showed up. He was busy he said. This and that and excuses she'd heard before. She could barely sleep through last  night as the kicking in her womb along with her thoughts connived to bring her pain. She was glad to be finally on her way. As they rode, The silence in the car stretched like the road before them. She couldn't wait to end this journey.

Finally they were there, 'Omega Hospital'. And without a word she stumbled out of his car with her bags. 'Let me know how everything goes. I can't drop my business transactions just because my girlfriend is sick with pregnancy? He sneered towards her belly. With that  he zoomed off and left a choking trail of dust and tears in her wake.
She wiped her tears and picked up her bags. Woe! Woe! The night they first made love. She remembered his words ' please let me in and I'll take care of you'. Instead he'd done naught but get her pregnant! Close to the hospital's entrance, the door opened suddenly, ' good evening madam how may we help you?' She heaved a great sigh as the guard took her bags.

It seemed like eternity before her son was born. And so with joy mixed with sorrow and trepidation, she looked into the face of Femi's bastard son. What the future held she knew not but she held in her arms the evidence that hope and love never left her side. It was wrapped In this innocent bundle - her baby boy.

THE SONG FOR THE WARRIOR ONE.

she sings aloud her praise song
as pistle meets mortar
e to wia! e to wai!
muscle, skin and oil
aglow with  the baptism of sunshine.
Her husband has done it again
her warrior one! Chief acrobat!
Master of loin satisfaction!

Last night was filled with fervor
as she melded in a rhythm of ecstacy
laden with passion and sighs of pleasure
with her Warrior One
today she's drunk in giddiness
as in song and dance she tells of thus
riddled with expectancy
of the night to come!
so with pistle, yam and mortar
e to wai! e to wai!
she chants her praise song wantonly
e to wai! e to wai!
letting her juices flow from within
this song for her warrior one!

let them hear!
gossip mongers and nay sayers!
as she sings aloud her praise song
e to wai! e to wai!
telling afresh the story
with mortar, yam and pistle
e to wai! e to wai!
this song for her warrior one.

THE ESCAPE

It was a cool summer evening by the beach and the best time of the year to enjoy night life. He sipped his drink silently, scanning his environment. Then their eyes met, instinctively staring at each other like prey and predator. He smiled, flashing at her his perfect set of white teeth. She giggled, motioning to the empty seat beside her. Like a man in a trance, he walked up to her, silently obeying her command. The vision before him was sheer entrancing and with their eyes they conveyed a message much more than words could have expressed. She downed the last of her drink showcasing the beautiful length of her neck and the curvy silhouette of what lay beneath her chiffon top.

He gulped noisily, allured by the temptation before him and the sensation that tingled below his belt, captivated by the curvy delicacy that sat before him. She stood up, picked up her purse and beckoned for him to follow. Again, like a zombie, he followed not knowing where she was going. Anywhere with this beauty was where he wanted to be. She walked towards the shoreline into the water with her long legs carrying her curvy figure seductively and not for a moment did she turn round to see if he was following. It was as if she knew the power she had that made him abandon all sense of reasoning and follow her no matter what.

Then she turned with her long hair billowing about her and a seductive smile playing on her lips. She stood in all her glory, full length in the midst of the waves like a sea goddess and reached out to him. Excitement coursed through him, his bulge threatening to slow his hasty pace but the vision before made him hold still within and march towards her hungrily. The more he walked in, the farther she was. All he knew was that he had to reach her, despite the furious waves around him. Thus, he walked on fearlessly like a drunken soldier. Finally he reached her and took her hand pulling her into a lovers embrace. Alas! She was his. He would never let go!

With the grace of a fish in their love locked embrace, she dived into the sea, a whole new world within. He was enthralled by the vision of the beautiful world that lay below. The fine ocean sand looked silvery-white and ‘goldish’. Unlocked from their embrace he began to explore, amazed at the discovery of this whole new world. He saw beauty beyond description and riches surpassing addition. He felt freer than he had ever been and a new sense of power filled his entire being. Soon his amazement turned into panic. He had mistakenly hit his foot against something hidden in the sand. Curious to know what is was, he bent down to investigate. Gently he uncovered something that looked like a bone. Hidden beneath the glimmering ocean bed were skulls of dead men! Afraid, He looked round to find his sultry companion but she wasn’t too far away. She had perched herself a ‘top a nearby rock watching him intently. Smiling wickedly she swan towards him, slowly transforming into what seemed like half human, half octopus! No longer was she the beautiful woman he knew but a beautiful- fiery sea goddess with a golden crown on her head and fire blazing in her eyes.

As he watched her transform, the fear that built up within him opened his eyes. It was as if he just snapped out of a hypnotic reverie, really realizing where he was for the first time. Sensing his fear, she gathered him close with her tentacles. Then she spoke;

‘My love, fear not. If you do my bidding, I will give you the world and fill you with power unimaginable! You are here now so there’s no turning back. If you resist, I will take your life! For I have shown you my world and revealed myself to you. To prove that you love me, give me the blood of your loved ones and denounce your belief in any other! I am jealous and will not share’.

He then asked, ‘who are you?’

‘I am the Queen of the Seas’ she replied.

‘You can give me power and riches you say?’

She laughed in response. Releasing him from her grip, she waved her tentacles stirring the ocean bed and before his eyes, mountains of gold, silver and amethyst appeared .

‘I will give you this and much more but you must feed me with the blood of your loved ones, starting with your wife and her unborn child.’

‘But I love my wife and we have waited for fifteen years for our baby.’

‘I cannot have you love another. Your allegiance must belong to me and no other!’

‘You have the wrong man, I’m afraid. I cannot give you that which you crave’.

‘If that is your decision, you must be very foolish to defy me! I can give you more babies but I must have this one’s blood! If you will not give me then I will take it by force. I will bring their dried carcass to you after I have sucked out their blood. Henceforth, you will remain here and become my slave and I will make sure that your existence will be wiped out from history!’

‘Please! I beg you. Spare their lives!’

‘No! I must have you in entirety or none at all!’

Angrily she swam away. In despair, he sat on the sea bed wailing and weeping. He wished that he would die rather than being a slave to this sea monster. He wept till his eyes were dry. Just when he thought that all hope was lost, he heard a voice in the gentlest of whispers - ‘For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved’.

He stood up with a start looking around. He wondered where the voice came from. Again he heard it again- ‘For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved’.  Seeing no one he decided to respond and with a shaky voice he spoke, ‘Lord of light, if it is indeed you, have mercy on me and save me!’

Then from afar he heard his name. Listening intently, it came from way up above. He looked up and saw the pathway of light. The light was bright, he could not ignore and so he swam upward to heed the call. Almost there, he heard a voice saying 'Take my hand; I'm here to save you'. So he stretched forth his hand and grasped the outstretched one before him. As he ascended, he felt the water stirring violently beneath him so he looked down to see what was wrong. He saw the sea monster swimming towards him full of rage.

'He is mine!' she bellowed 'I got him first!'

Immediately, the Voice replied, 'He is my son. I loved him first! Son, hold on tightly and don’t look back. Let me be your Savior, your Warrior and your Redeemer’.

She reached out for him plunging into the light but the purity of the light burnt her to ashes, sending her remains to the bottom of the sea. He looked to the light, warm and inviting. Still holding on tightly, he felt the warmth, surety and strength pulling him up and away into redemption.

In another world, he coughed, waking to the euphoria of pain ringing in his head. Gingerly touching his head, he looked all around him. No creature, no water and no light. All was white and he was alive! At the foot of his bed sat his pregnant wife, asleep with a bible in her lap. Relief swept through him like a chill. Amazingly it was all a dream! And then he recalled how he got here...the car, the trailer and his drunken friends. After a moment's reflection, with tears in his eyes, all he could say was 'Thank you Lord for saving me'.
